The Other People
In December, leaders of the Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Black, Christian, and Asian communities hosted a forum for Richmond Secondary students. The group, known as The Other People, aims to help students develop cultural competence by engaging with the challenging issue of hate and racism in Canada. Their underlying goal is to help break down barriers that get in the way of getting to know and celebrate the different communities in our country that form our rich cultural mosaic. While our students posed tough and provocative questions to the panel, they in turn were challenged about their own personal bias. It was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about personal and media bias, and an opportunity to reflect and critically think about the representation of others. The Other People's departing message to the audience to "break through the barriers that prevent us all from accepting and understanding one another" complemented our school's ethos of "Kindness, Care, and Respect". We were grateful for this valuable learning opportunity and the important messages of antiracism, diversity, and inclusion.
